Just to give you an idea about what it’s like to be Jewish, Sesame Street posted several Christmas posts and the responses have overwhelmingly been heartwarming and sweet. They also posted this Chanukah post, and while there are many lovely responses from Jews and non-Jews alike, there are so many comments that are vile and hateful, and the post has more comments than all of the Christmas posts combined.

While some are just your run-of-the-mill, passive-aggressive “Merry Christmas” responses (because God forbid there should be other holiday celebrations at the same time as Christmas, even though there are at least five Christmas posts), others reference the war, Gaza, genocide, the Holocaust… One person wrote that “six million is a made-up number”.

There are debates about religion, arguments about Israel, random Jew hatred, and ridiculous amounts of ignorance. In other words, a whole slew of individuals who are, ostensibly, adults, are attacking Jews and Judaism (and Sesame Street!) on a Chanukah holiday post shared by one of the most beloved American children’s television programs – a program that has, since its inception, taught generations of children about the beauty of diversity and the importance of inclusion.

Happy Chanukah…
